About PATRIOT FOUNDATION
What does it mean to “Take care of those left behind?”
Through scholarships, the Patriot Foundation supports the educational goals of qualifying disabled Veterans and the family members of fallen or disabled Veterans.
This help comes in the form of post-secondary scholarships for the family members of these soldiers.
We believe that education is the most important tool for creating prosperity and success in the lives of America’s youth. By supporting the families of service members impacted by post 9/11 conflicts, it not only gives them the life-changing opportunity to go to college, it also honors the sacrifices our soldiers have made for our freedom.
Our vision is to provide scholarship funding for any family member whose service member was killed, or is wounded, injured, or seriously ill. We believe that anyone who has served our Nation and defended our freedom should be entitled to an education. The cost of an education should not stand in the way of a dream.
Patriot Foundation was founded in 2003 by Spike Smith and his wife, Debbie. Spike decided to host a charity golf tournament in North Carolina to raise money for the troops. 9/11 was a recent memory, and our country was in the early years of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the War in Afghanistan.
Initially, a tournament was held to benefit soldiers in the Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) area. Living near by meant that the Smiths were able to see the need these families faced first hand. As time went on, the charity grew. The idea to raise money and partner with other organizations who are close to the populations we serve was the first step in creating the Patriot Foundation as it is today.
Slowly, we have grown from focusing only on Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) to supporting multiple military installations and services across the country. This growth has been made possible by corporate sponsorships from companies and individuals donations. All who are passionate and understand the important work we are doing for the families of wounded, injured, ill, and fallen service members.
